Along the country highway stood a young, emaciated, white shepherd mix, scavenging for food beside a cemetery. I had to stop. Thanks to a generous food donation, I was able to get this girl to come to me, close enough to see her body was trying to produce milk. Thin scabby lines on her teats were evidence she had babies waiting on her return. Covered in fleas and ticks, notice how the sudden involuntary wagging of her tail startled her. No telling how long it had been since she had anything to wag about. I wanted to take her in immediately, but knowing her babies would not survive without her, I headed home as quickly as I could to get flea and tick meds. I made it back and she greeted me again, still spiriting the country graveside. Once she and her beau were fed and treated, I set out across the road to a home nearby to inquire if they knew anything about her. A man named Carl walked cautiously out. What I learned moved me even more than her soulful eyes already had. Her human passed about a month ago, right before she gave birth to her beau's pups, and was laid to rest beneath the bouquet of blue roses. She spent her days at her grave, going back and forth caring for her puppies. No one knew where the babies were, but he directed me to the home of the deceased companion in search of her nephew who had apparently been feeding her when able. A mile down the road to the home, I was unable to get anyone to answer the door. So, I returned to ask if I could leave my information with Carl who had given me directions. He did better. He offered to ride over with me, told me to blow my horn, and the nephew soon emerged. He knew nothing about the whereabouts of the puppies and was leery to share any information with me. After explaining that I wanted to help, I asked him if I could frequent the property in search of them and requested that he refrain from shooting me. "I get you," he replied. While driving Carl home, he called out, "There she is now." About 400 yards in front of us, mama trotted toward us down the dirt road toward her home. This was our chance. With a pleasantly full belly and a family waiting, she cut through the pasture to get away from the car, not realizing it was us. I stopped the car and asked Carl, "Carl, you a praying man?" "Yes ma'am." "Will you pray with me?" "Sure will." And so two strangers, far removed in every way, closed our eyes together and asked for God to lead us to help this family in honor of Ms. Carey, who had passed. I opened my eyes and looked at Carl, his eyes still closed as he spoke, "Jesus name. Amen." We pulled out, back down the road, stopping periodically so as not to concern the mother. Up the dirt drive she started, proudly, her visit to her mother had proved fruitful and she was ready for the relief her babies cries and sharp nails and suckling would bring, the satisfying discomfort that often accompanies sacrificing oneself for a greater cause. Not knowing she was being watched, she ducked covertly under an old shed, the same shed I had stopped and looked under on my way to take Carl home. I had seen nothing, heard nothing. She had taught her babies well. But once mom was home, three little girls came out of the woodworks, all cries of hunger and pleasure and ecstasy that I believe a soul only feels three times: at the bosom of a mother, in the arms of true love, and in total surrender to the Giver of all good things. Passionate people, please welcome Mama Angel and her three little female angels, Jaclyn, Kate, and Farrah.??
